On-premises data gateway April 2021 update is now available

Headshot of article author Arthi Ramasubramanian Iyer

We are happy to announce that we have just released the April update for the On-premises data gateway (version 3000.79.6)

Here are some of the things that we would like to highlight with this month’s  release:

  • Test single sign-on (SSO) configuration
  • GA -SSO for Refresh and DirectQuery
  • PowerShell enhancements
  • Compatible with the April PBI desktop

Test single sign-on (SSO) configuration

Single sign-on capability enables each user precisely see the data for which they have permissions in the underlying data source. We do, however, understand that setting up Single Sign-On (SSO) via the gateways using either Kerberos constrained delegation or Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) is complex. With this new feature,  you now have the ability to test this configuration.

In the Manage Gateways page in Power BI, where you configure the data source for SSO, under Advanced Settings for the data source, provide a User Principal Name to test.

If either the user cant be impersonated or if the user doesn’t have access to the underlying data source, you will see the appropriate error which helps you identify the problem area for a potential fix.

Also refer to our SSO troubleshooting docs for frequent errors and possible causes and additional details.

We hope this feature makes troubleshooting for Single Sign-On via the gateway significantly easier.

General Availability – SSO for Refresh

About a year ago, we released SSO for Refresh for data sources supporting  Kerberos constrained delegation in public preview. This feature  uses Dataset owner’s security context(UPN) for Refresh-based Reports.  We are happy to announce that this feature is now in GA.

PowerShell enhancements

We released PowerShell scripts for the automation of gateway installation and management  last year. we have made some enhancements to these PowerShell scripts.

  • Ability to view a gateway data source using “Get-DataGatewayClusterDatasource”.
  • Allow adding and removing of Service Principals as Data source users using Add-DataGatewayClusterUser.
  • Documentation updates for Add-DataGatewayCluster, Add-DataGatewayClusterUser and   Add-DataGatewayClusterDatasourceUser,

Please review our online documentation for additional details.

Compatible with April PBI Desktop

This version of the gateway will ensure that the reports that you publish to the Power BI Service and refresh via the Gateway will go through the same query execution logic/run-time as in the April Power BI Desktop version.

Please continue to send us feedback for what new capabilities you’d like to see in the future.
