Power BI Desktop Installer Changes & WebView2

As mentioned in the June and July feature summaries, we are switching a vital component of Power BI from CefSharp to WebView2. We’re making this switch to better optimize our development and release process (which means we’ll be able to spend more time developing new features!). It also means that you’ll automatically get the latest security patches as the WebView2 team ships them instead of waiting for us to update Power BI Desktop. Please continue reading as we have some important announcements to make and recommended actions for you to take.

Power BI solution templates moving to open source

Announcement January 1, we will be moving Power BI solution templates to open source.

New Power BI regions in India, Australia, and the United States

Starting today, Power BI is expanding to four new regions, allowing customers to locate their Power BI deployments closer to their data sources, either in Azure or on-premises, thus enabling faster performance of data refresh and lower networking egress costs.

Coming soon: Changes to the Power BI service – simpler navigation, improvements to lists on Home, and style updates

We continue to iteratively improve experiences that help you find relevant content and return to your work in the Power BI service. Upon hearing your feedback, conducting usability tests, and running successful A/B experiments we’re sharing the following changes coming to all users in early June 2022. Here’s what’s coming: Navigation changes – the introduction of the Browse page which merges Favorites, Recent, and Shared with me. Changes to Home – improved lists on Home now show all content for those lists, not just the first 12. We also added filters and the ability to search those lists in-page. Style updates – Power BI styles (colors, icons, fonts, and more) will be updated to align with the Fluent design system.

Composite models on SQL Server Analysis Services

SQL Server 2022 Analysis Services will support composite models and it is now ready for you to try out with the CTP2 that has just launched. After you install this CTP for SQL Server 2022 on a server, tabular models are hosted on that server can now be used to create a composite model with.

Get inspired for 2017 with The 12 Days of Dashboards

While most of us spent the last two weeks drinking eggnog and spending time with family and friends, Microsoft’s Sam Lester found an additional way to celebrate: creating a new blog series called “The 12 Days of Power BI Dashboards”. Each dashboard is based on a unique, yet common, data source that almost everyone can access.
