Power BI Export Solution We created a custom visual tool to export Power BI report data to Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. Out of the box Power BI tools only export individual charts to Excel and simple reports to PowerPoint. Our solution exports entire reports to Excel and PowerPoint, unlocking new potential in Power BI.

The Challenge

Power BI’s native ability to export charts and visuals to Excel and PowerPoint is limited. With Excel, Power BI currently only lets users export single charts. There is no option to export multiple charts or visuals. With PowerPoint, Power BI users can only export simple reports. Power BI does not let users export custom visuals or complex reports to PowerPoint.

MAQ Software’s solution addresses the following native Power BI limitations:

  1. No option for template-based data exports.
  2. Export to Excel only allows one visual at a time.

Our solution uses a custom visual to make a call to an Azure service to retrieve the required data. The custom visual acts as a bridge between the Azure service and the Power BI report. Users can set the service URL in the visual’s settings. After the visual makes a call to the Azure service with the required filter data, the service fetches data from the database/cube and filters it using the filter data. Once the data is in place, users can export the data to Excel or PowerPoint.

The ability to export multiple visuals, heavy reports, and entire data sets from Power BI to Excel and PowerPoint gives users full control over their data presentations. 

Limitations with MAQ Software’s solution:

  1. Only works with out of box visuals.
  2. Only works with Power BI Online, not the desktop version.

Update: New Solution for Exporting Power BI Visuals to PowerPoint

Our new Power BI Export to PPT solution allows users to export images of the visuals from Power BI reports directly to Microsoft PowerPoint, quickly creating slide decks with the latest data.

New features in Power BI Export to PPT:

  1. Export visuals from multiple reports and workspaces (including My Workspace).
  2. Export certified and non-certified custom visuals, including R visuals.
  3. Support for custom Microsoft PowerPoint templates, including custom headers and footers.
  4. Selected Power BI visuals are exported as high-resolution images in Microsoft PowerPoint.
