Today we presented at the BI Bake Off session at Gartner Data and Analytics Summit in Grapevine, Texas and we are happy to share the report with everyone in this post.

A little bit of background: every year, Gartner organizes this event to allow the modern BI leaders to showcase their solutions around a timely topic. The data topic for this year was the opioid epidemic.

This is a very serious subject as Dennis Schmuland MD FAAFP, Chief Health Strategy Officer, Microsoft US Health & Life Sciences writes on the Microsoft Enterprise blog:

“Opioid abuse is a serious public health issue and a problem that affects almost every community and family in some way. What’s most alarming about the crisis is that opioid overdose deaths have recently risen to become the leading cause of death of Americans under the age of 50. In the last decade alone, the number of opioid overdose deaths has increased by 450 percent. That’s 44 people who die each day from prescription opioid overdose.

Worse, despite widespread awareness and national-to-local efforts to stem the crisis, it’s getting worse, not better. Between 2015 and 2016, overdose deaths in the U.S. rose an estimated 19 percent, the largest spike yet.”

The concept of the bake-off is very straight forward. Vendors are asked to use a consistent data set to facilitate a side-by-side comparison. Gartner tries to pick data sets that also allow participants to showcase how the data and analytics community can do good with data.

For this year, we produced this investigation looking for interesting patterns or insights on the subject, but also to show off some capabilities of Power BI.

The data provided by Gartner that came from CDC, Medicaid and other government sources, and we enhanced it using the Bing News and Twitter solution templates to provide social and public context.

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • We found that Purdue Pharmaceuticals have a significantly higher amount of reimbursements from Medicaid claims than other manufacturers of Oxycodone based drugs, and in particular in North Carolina and Missouri.
  • We saw a number of news article explaining that these states are currently suing Purdue Pharma over claims made about their drug OxyContin. Details on the 3rd page of the report
  • You'll also see an example of new report page tooltips there – hover over one of the scatter chart markers to see details about that state. You can also right-click them to drill through to a detail page

We are not the first ones using Power BI to analyze and maybe take action on this very important topic. Samaritan Health Services has been using Microsoft solutions, including Power BI, to drive local success with a data driven approach. You can learn more about their efforts reading the interview where Dennis sat down with Ryan Combs, VP of Primary & Specialty Care of Samaritan Health Services to discuss their efforts.
