Data Source management on Power platform admin center

Headshot of article author Arthi Ramasubramanian Iyer

We recently centralized gateway management experience on the Power platform admin center. We are now happy to announce that we are introducing data source management on admin center as well.

Note: This experience will be embedded within Power BI in the future once we have feature parity and will replace the existing “Manage gateways” page.

You can access this feature by clicking on Data as shown below. This was called Data Gateways previously.

You will now see two tabs called “Data sources” and “Data Gateways”. The Data Gateways tab would include all gateway management feature while  the Data sources view provides visibility into Power BI cloud and on-premises data sources.   Learn more about supported data sources.

Note:

  • Ability to add or edit data sources isn’t available with this release but will be coming soon.
  • Data sources tab will not be available when you log in as a tenant or service admin and the Tenant Administration toggle is turned on.

Data sources

The on-premises data sources visible here include all on-premises data source definitions on gateways you are administrator of. The cloud data sources shown here are cloud connections in your published Power BI reports. In addition, you can review the following information about these data sources:

  • Data source name: Name of the data source
  • Data source type: Type of the data source. More information regarding the list of supported data sources.
  • Data source users: Users who can use this data source in datasets and dataflow
  • Status: Select to check the status of the data source
  • Gateway Cluster Name: The gateway cluster on which this data source was created. If it is a cloud data source, this value will say “Cloud”

Settings

Select a data source and then select Settings to see the following information. This view is currently read-only but we are working on enhancing this in the upcoming releases.

  • Data source name: Name of the data source
  • Data source type: Type of the data source. More information regarding the list of supported data sources.
  • Connection Details: Connection Information. We plan to expand this in the future like you see in the “Managed gateways” page in Power BI
  • Authentication method: The authentication method chosen for this connection.

Manage Users

Select a data source and then select Manage Users to see the list of current data source users. These users can use this data source in published reports and dataflows. Currently you cannot add users but are able to remove users

Remove

Select a data source and then select Remove to remove the selected data source.

Search

Use Search to find data sources and see their details. You currently can search on data source names, data source types and gateway cluster name.

Please continue to send us feedback for what new capabilities you’d like to see in the future.
