Announcing general availability for composite models on Power BI Datasets and Analysis Services models

In December 2020, we launched the preview of DirectQuery for Power BI Datasets and Analysis Services. Since then, we have worked with many of you to improve on this feature and get it ready for general availability. Today we are announcing that this feature has reached general availability.

What’s new in SQL Server 2022 Analysis Services CTP 2.0

SQL Server 2022 Analysis Services is now available for public preview! SSAS 2022 tabular models now join forces in Power BI Desktop with other data to create composite models, speed up MDX queries used in Excel PivotTables, allow for more control over resources, and get data back to business users faster when demand is high.

Update to required permissions when using composite models on a Power BI dataset

The ability to create a composite model on top of a Power BI dataset or an Azure Analysis Services model is in preview since December 2020. Since then, we have seen great adoption of this feature and have received great feedback that allowed us to make it even better! The team has been hard at work readying the feature for general availability, and although we are not announcing that today, we have great news to share regarding permissions.

In Nov 2018, we released composite models, which allow you to seamlessly add multiple DirectQuery sources and imported data to your models. We have heard your feedback that you would like to do this with sources you previously live connected to, like Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services sources. We are excited to announce that DirectQuery for Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services is now in preview! This long-awaited addition allows report authors to use DirectQuery to connect to Azure Analysis Services or Power BI Datasets as sources in combination with other DirectQuery and imported data

Power BI Desktop November 2018 Feature Summary

We have a massive Power BI Desktop update this month. Composite models, which allow you combine direct query and import sources together in one model, is now generally available. Two of the top feature requests on UserVoice, expand/collapse on the matrix and copy and pasting visuals between Desktop files, are also shipping this month. We are previewing a completely revamped filter pane that is highly customizable and have a ton of other product updates as well!
