The date you have long waited for has finally arrived!  The public preview of Power BI Premium per user has been enabled in all public tenants that requested priority access, and will be rolling out to all tenants worldwide throughout the month of November.  Now, Power BI users have access to all the Power BI Premium capabilities, on a per user basis, for the entire public preview period for free.

11/20/20 Update – With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday in the US next week, we have ended priority access sign-ups.  We begin onboarding all tenants to the public preview starting the week of 11/30.

How to get started

Once onboarded, users will have the ability to leverage a Premium per user trial license they can be assigned one of two ways.

  • Via in-product trial experience
  • Via the Microsoft 365 admin center

For 99% of customers, you should leverage the in-product trial experience for your users to get started with Premium per user.  Here is how you can get access once your tenant is onboarded.

Existing Pro users – You will be prompted for a Premium per user license once you enable the capacity for any existing Power BI workspace.  To do so, go to the workspace settings and select the Premium tab.  You may then enable the Premium capacity and select the Premium Per User capacity in the dropdown

Upon saving the workspace, Premium per user will be enabled for that workspaces and any apps you create from it.

Please note: for now, you may only enable the capacity when you update the workspace (it will not be available upon initial creation of a workspace).  We will allow you to do this upon creation of a workspace in the next month or so.

Existing Free users – You will be given access to the PPU capabilities during the public preview period if you choose to opt-in to a Pro trial as an added benefit.  Since it will happen behind the scenes, the UI in the portal will still reflect that you have a Pro trial, but you will be able to access all the PPU features.

For the set of customers that have disabled their in-product trial experience, your Microsoft 365 tenant admin can opt-in to a trial experience there.
