DirectQuery for Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services (preview)

In Nov 2018, we released composite models, which allow you to seamlessly add multiple DirectQuery sources and imported data to your models. We have heard your feedback that you would like to do this with sources you previously live connected to, like Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services sources. We are excited to announce that DirectQuery for Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services is now in preview! This long-awaited addition allows report authors to use DirectQuery to connect to Azure Analysis Services or Power BI Datasets as sources in combination with other DirectQuery and imported data

Today’s announcements give a roadmap update for workspace upgrade, content pack deprecation, and announce new tools for Power BI Admins to upgrading classic workspaces through the admin portal. Announcements: Workspace upgrade has reached general availability. We’ve started to roll-out tools for Power BI admins to upgrade classic workspaces. We’re providing a roadmap update below including dates for removing the ability to create, update, and use content packs in classic workspaces.

Moving on-premises AS and RS BI solutions to Azure – and closer to Power BI

With the availability of virtual machine images for SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) in Azure Marketplace, you can now more easily migrate your AS and RS BI solutions from on-premises to Azure! This is a great opportunity to move your multidimensional workloads closer to Power BI to reduce the physical distance between your AS servers and your Power BI reports. For the same reasons, it’s also a good idea to deploy Azure VMs running SSRS in the same region as your SSAS VMs, or to migrate your paginated reports to Power BI so that your reports have the most efficient connectivity to their data models.
