Enhanced Report Creation in the Power BI Service with Copilot (Public Preview)

Headshot of article author Anita Ambalavanan

When we released Report Creation in the Power BI service last year, we introduced the ability to leverage Copilot to quickly make reports. We are happy to announce enhancements to the Report Creation capability in Power BI with Copilot! These updates are designed to make your experience clearer and more transparent and improve Copilot outputs.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Work with Copilot to clarify intent and details of reports created.
  • Report outlines to improve transparency are what data fields are being used.

Increased Clarity and Contextual Awareness

To help you initially build more valuable reports, Copilot can now engage with users to gather more details before creating a page. This ensures that Copilot has a comprehensive understanding of your needs right from the start to create a more relevant page for you. Note that the LLM does not train on or store any of the data in your semantic model.

Additionally, Copilot will recommend fields and measures to use in a report, making it easier to create well-structured, insightful reports.

You can now work with Copilot to specify exactly what you want from your report page.

Page Outline and Increasing Transparency

After creating a page with Copilot, you’ll see an outline in the Copilot chat pane. This allows you to review the content and ensure the page meets your requirements. The outline also helps add transparency so users can see what data fields Copilot is using to build out the report.

How to Access Copilot in Power BI

To access the updates outlined in this blog post, you will need to be in edit mode in service and turn on the preview toggle found in the Copilot pane:

To access Copilot in the Power BI service, your workspace needs to be on F64 or Power BI Premium capacity. Copilot is enabled by default in Fabric, but admins have the option to turn it off. If Copilot is disabled in your workspace, please contact your admin to have it enabled. To generate Copilot reports in the workspace, you need edit access. Additionally, to access new report creation features, you will need to turn on the preview toggle in the Copilot pane while in edit mode.

We hope that these enhancements will improve your experience with Copilot in Power BI, making it easier to generate relevant reports. As with all Copilot experiences, responses are generated with AI, be sure to check your work. Stay tuned for exciting updates coming soon, as we are continually improving the way that you build reports with Copilot.

Happy reporting!
