Excel announces new data visualization capabilities with Power BI custom visuals

Today, as part of Build, we announced that Power BI Custom Visuals will be rolling out in Preview to Office 365 subscribers enrolled in the Office Insiders program soon, extending Excel charting capabilities and more than doubling the data visualization options for the most widely used data analytics tool in the world.

Power BI Revs Up NASCAR Fantasy Game

The new driver comparison tool uses historical data from NASCAR’s robust data warehouse to compare two drivers at all the tracks on this year’s schedule. Now, for the first time, fans can compare the full racing profile of two drivers all in one place. This is just the first step in a greater effort for NASCAR to share race data with fans in a new and exciting way.

The Art and Science of Action-Driven Visual Analytics

Last year I went to our CMO Chris Capossela’s talk called “What’s Great Data in Microsoft”. In this talk, he listed five of the most important characteristics of good data: self-describe, fresh, forward thinking, inclusive, and adopted. The last one – adopted – is what he emphasized the most, and he challenged us to think harder about turning data into business actions.

Microsoft Power BI receives the Esri New Technology Integration Award for 2017

Today we’re excited and humbled to receive the 2017 Esri Partner Conference (EPC) – New Technology Integration award for taking map visualization and geo-analytics to the next level by integrating ArcGIS in a new or innovative way. This award from Esri is one additional validation of the work the Power BI team is doing in a partner-centric way, making Power BI a great place for partners to showcase their unique value. From everyone on the Power BI team, we’d like to thank Esri for this recognition and say a big thank you to the dedicated team that spans Microsoft and Esri working to infuse breath into our shared vision of bringing GIS to every business user. Seven Steps for Using Data and Power BI to be Productive in Telling a Data Story

The Microsoft Office team recently partnered with Levo, a network for millennials in the workplace to help navigate their career paths, to poll 1,500 community members to find out more about their productivity habits and challenges. The Office team was looking for an engaging way to share Levo’s findings with the media – one approach they took was to use Microsoft Power BI to produce an interactive and compelling report from the data. This report is an example using data visualization to enhance storytelling efforts by leveraging the Power BI publish to web capability on blogs, websites and news articles. Power BI has also proved to be a great tool for telling stories in broadcast media – one example is the recent election coverage from KING 5 News. As I dug through the data, I got to thinking about my own productivity habits and how I work with data to tell a story.
