Announcing: The Admin Monitoring Workspace is now available in the US Government Cloud Tenants (GCC, GCC High, DoD)

We’re pleased to announce that the Admin monitoring workspace is now available for Microsoft Power BI in these US government clouds :

  • Government Community Cloud (GCC)
  • Government Community Cloud High (GCC High)
  • Department of Defense (DoD)

Note: The Power BI service has a special US government version, which is part of the Microsoft 365 Government plans. The enrollment process that this article describes is different from the process for the commercial version of the Power BI service. To learn more about enrollment requirements, visit this page.

Introducing the Admin Monitoring workspace:

The Admin monitoring workspace provides organizations with pre-built Power BI reports and semantic models which can be used to track tenant-level inventory and audit activities for the past 30 days. It is fully managed by Microsoft which means we will ensure that you receive the latest insights but also new updates as we incrementally add them. This feature allows tenant admins to access metadata and audit logs seamlessly for improved administrative decision-making. Learn more about these features in our Admin monitoring introduction blog post and documentation.

Tenant admins can also take advantage of the built-in semantic model capabilities to build custom reporting on top of the base model. For example, you can collect tenant-level inventory insights around inactive workspaces and items, similar to the process described in our blog about how Admin Monitoring is replacing the legacy (and now unsupported) Admin Portal Usage metrics dashboard).

Here is a brief overview of the content currently supported:

  • The Feature Usage and Adoption report provides an in-depth analysis of how different features are utilized and adopted across your tenant. The report is designed for admins to analyze a variety of usage scenarios. Use the Date range slicer to filter activity data across all pages for a specific range of time over the last 30 days. For a detailed overview of the report, please read here.
  • The Purview Hub report enables tenant administrators to review endorsement and sensitivity labeling throughout their organization’s data estate. This report and the associated semantic model are also located in the Admin monitoring workspace. To learn more about the Purview Hub report, please read here.

Manage access

There are several ways you can manage access to content within the Admin monitoring workspace. If you’re a PBI administrator, you can share these reports and sematic models to others in your organization with or without re-share and build permissions.

  • Workspace– You can only add users to the Viewer role of the admin monitoring workspace. However, there is a current limitation where once a Viewer role is provided, it can’t be taken away without deleting and recreating the workspace. Learn how to give users access to the workspace in manage access functionality within a workspace.
  • Report - You can also share a report with other users via Manage permissions (direct share) or a link.
  • Semantic model - You can share access to a semantic model with other users. However, there is a current limitation where, once a semantic model is shared, you cannot undo sharing it without deleting and recreating the entire workspace.

We’re excited to learn from your experiences while using the Admin monitoring workspace. Leave us a note below, or head over to the Ideas page to help shape the future of the Admin monitoring workspace.
